Qur’an Memorizing Tips by HQB Sisters 🌙
Muraja’ah (Repeating)
- Repeat an ayah 20 times to make our brain accustomed to it.
- Trigger automation by repeating the materials in the everyday activities, i.e. cleaning up, cooking, driving.
- Don’t give up easily, always check where we might memorize it wrongly, what ayahs do we usually mix up.
- Memorizing the Qur’an is a long and stressful journey for everyone. Ask for Allah ﷻ’s help and do repent.
Taddabur (Contemplate)
- Be curious about the ‘story’ of every surah. Read the tafseer, look out for the difficult arabic words and find the meaning. Break the surah into several chapters or blocks, i.e. the 1st to 16th ayahs of An-Naba talk about the Resurrection Day. Use the Al-Qur’an Taddabur application or the mushaf designed for Qur’an memorization.
- The more difficult the ayah, the more we repeat it, the more we will memorize it إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّه
Listen to Murattal (Tarteel Qur’an Recitation)
- Reduce (❗❗❗) the frequency of listening to music.
- Repurpose our Spotify and YouTube for listening to murattal. Add more stimulus into our brain.
- Every ayah has certain ‘melody.’ Take advantage of that to make memorization easier.
Ask for a help from our family or friends to check if we apply the proper tajweed.
Practice our memorization while praying (salah).
Memorize during our most productive hours; for example, some prefer after Fajr or Maghrib prayer.
Building Habits (4 Principles of Habits Building by James Clear)
- Make it visible. Place the Qur’an on a table near our prayer area (where it’s easily visible). Add the Qur’an application to our phone’s home screen to remind ourselves to open it regularly.
- Make it interesting. Look for a Qur’an with a block system that includes word-by-word translation. Listening to murattal on Spotify or YouTube can also enhance interest. The best approach depends on our personal learning style.
- Make it easy. Start with 2-3 verses first (according to your ability). However, don’t make it too easy, keep our brain appropriately challenged.
- Make it satisfying. Feel satisfied by having more varied prayer readings and by maintaining a consistent streak of memorization within our group.
